There are many forms of retting, aerobic, anaerobic, enzyme, chemical etc. But 
if the plant material is just open to the outdoors then that would be like 
composting, aerobic (likes air bugs). Maybe composting would give us a clue.

P.S. I have a meat grinder (mincer) on order. May arrive as early as this 
Friday.
