Tom asks ...

But how much of this is practicable?

The principle source of fuel in the US until ~1850 was wood, supplying about 2 quads at that time.  Biomass  is currently supplying closer to 4 quads.  How much could it supply if we gave it a chance?

How practicable is running out of fossil fuels  without having a substitute??
