[Bioconversion] Torrified woodcips

Driving off the volatiles through preheating the wood chips without using  
those volatiles seems counterintuitive to my uneducated  mind.  Gasification is 
a process to release the energy of the  fuel through volatile gasses. (Or I 
think it is)
 
Aren't there systems that use external heat to volatilize fuels and produce  
combustible gases and charcoal?  Wouldn't this torrified wood have gone  
through the same process?  If so, valuable gases would be produced and  should be 
used in the end process whether it is heat or engine fuel.  Not  to recycle the 
gases would be a great waste.
