[Digestion] Methanol from Biogas

NYSERDA (New York State Energy Research and Development Authority) funded
a feasibility study to address this question for New York City. Currently,
it appears to be infeasible, for a couple of reasons, primarily economic.
First, the current state of reformer technology is such that conventional
methane reformers are too large for the volume of biogas produced by even
the larger WWTP. (The advent of fuel cells, however, is pushing the
technology and perhaps we will see more appropriately-sized reformers in
the future.) Second, the cost of methanol has decreased substantially
since MTBE has been eliminated from most (all?) gasoline. Drop me an
email at the address below and I can send you a copy of the fact sheet for
the project.
Sincerely,
Kathleen M. O'Connor, P.E.

Since many wastewater facilities require methanol (for denitrification)
and
also produce copious biogas, I wonder if there are any facilities out link
these two? I'd be interested in technologies, demonstrations, or related
research.
