Through this message I wish to convey that biogas is not always the ideal
fuel for producing electricity. Methane is a high grade form of fuel. If you
want to run an internal combustion engine, you may have to convert the
biomass into methane. But a lot energy is lost in the process of
biomethanation itself. One kg dry dung would yield 2600 kcal of energy if it
is burned directly, but converted into methane, it yields only 600 kcal
energy. Drying dung or any other biomass for direct combustion is not a
problem in India. One can produce electricity by using a steam turbine, in
which the steam can be generated by burning any fuel. The sugar industry
burns bagasse for this purpose. Similarly, municipal solid waste can also be
burned directly to produce steam and the steam can be used to produce
electricity.
Yours
A.D.Karve
