Dear Karve

Your suggestion on using cow dung and bagasse seemed to be advantageous. Can you please give some information on air pollution related issues for making the process as a ecofriendly solidwaste management system?

  Thanking you

  Ramanujam

Ramanujam.

All we do in the cold climates is set up a small scale electrical generator
at the digestion site. It produces electric power for ourselves and, if
there is excess, for the grid. We recover the waste heat and heat the
buildings and the digester tanks as well. It is not a big problem. Instead
of generating power off site and wasting the rejected heat, we keep the
power generation onsite and recover the exhaust and water jacket heat
instead of wasting it.

Such a system could work in the Antarctic if necessary (with suitable
insulation).

Through this message I wish to convey that biogas is not always the ideal
fuel for producing electricity. Methane is a high grade form of fuel. If you
want to run an internal combustion engine, you may have to convert the
biomass into methane. But a lot energy is lost in the process of
biomethanation itself. One kg dry dung would yield 2600 kcal of energy if it
is burned directly, but converted into methane, it yields only 600 kcal
energy. Drying dung or any other biomass for direct combustion is not a
problem in India. One can produce electricity by using a steam turbine, in
which the steam can be generated by burning any fuel. The sugar industry
burns bagasse for this purpose. Similarly, municipal solid waste can also be
burned directly to produce steam and the steam can be used to produce
electricity.
Yours
A.D.Karve
