[Digestion] Heating of a digestor

Dear Davaa,

Couple of years ago, we have constructed a mesophilic digester of 8 m3, a
steel tank to treat landfill leachate. The digester was a vertical steel
cylinder with isolation. We have used a side entry electrical heater of 1 kW
and it was successful to keep the digester at 35 C degrees constantly
(outdoors). Of course there must be a temperature sensor and control system
to avoid the overheating. 

In your case of your system, you should probably use more than 1 electrical
heater, but it is a simple system I guess for that small size digesters, and
you may end up with less electrical energy consumption. 

We also have constructed more than 25 large digesters (> 1500 m3), where we
use boiler and heat exchanger system using the produced biogas as the heat
source, however this would not be efficient for your case I guess.

We have built a 20 cubic metre digestor under ground in 2005/2006.
We have successfully used it for 2 families for summer of 2006. It was not
operational during winter 2006/2007 due to heating system. Now we are trying
to modify existing heating system.

100 m long heating pipe is installed under the floor. It was used for
heating from the beginning. Unfortunately it uses 5 kW boiler and pump the
water to underground.

It is quite expensive to use electrocity.

Please share your experience heating a digestor using a biogas/electric or
other system.
