Hi Rex,
I live in Galicia -NW of Spain- and I would like to give it a try too-since I have family infrastructures where I could try to do the same.
I will take a look at algae species growing around my area and will discuss with you guys which one has the highest potential.
Since I am involved in PV I have not much time as I wish to have so some guidance will help.
Thank you.
Adrian

Subject: Algae or aquatic plants for ethanol?
Rex, You have said algae initially.
I see others writing about duckweed and water hyacinth.... is that a
distraction from what you meant, or is it embracing what you want?
OR
Are you really talking about tiny aquatic algae only in suspension??
Sometimes in Jamaica, the word algae is erroneously used to describe all
type of aquatic plants..
Clarify please.

Mike,
I am definitely building a micro algae (5 to 10 micron diameter)
raceway. I will harvest the algae (I have quite a few ideas that cost
from little to a lot of money) that will yield a slurry. I intend
fermenting this slurry with yeast to yield a "beer". The beer will be
boiled to recover most of the ethanol. The warm residue will be pumped
into the AD. Here it will break down further yielding biogas which, in
turn, will be used to provide power and heat to the system. Liquid
digestate will go into the algae ponds as nutrient. Solid digestate that
sinks will be removed from time to time and composted for our garden.
The reason for selecting the algae is due to its reproduction rate. To
ensure that I keep up a good environment, the fermentation CO2 and the
quenched exhaust gas after burning the biogas will be piped into the
algae ponds. It really is as simple as that.
All the best
Rex
