I don't presume to explain theories of this kind, better that those institutions who teach it. So, I'll just defer you to those ".edu" sites who have it all there for your reading pleasure. Specifically, a search on "critical radius of insulation" and a filter for ".edu" sites should give you what you need to know.

I'll add that when my college professor first introduced the principle, I didn't believe him and thought it was some kind of prank - until he gave us the page numbers in the text book which explained it in detail.
