By the way, it says in Prof. Lienhard's book (pg. 74):

“There is an interesting catch here. For most cylinders, rcrit < ri and the critical radius idiosyncrasy is of no concern.”

I may have mentioned this in a previous post. Critical radius of insulation is usually not a concern except for smaller diameters.

P.S. Sorry for my misspellings: I meant to say, I don't presume to explain theories of this kind better than those institutions who teach it.

  Hi Peter, et al,

I don't presume to explain theories of this kind, better that those institutions who teach it. So, I'll just defer you to those ".edu" sites who have it all there for your reading pleasure. Specifically, a search on "critical radius of insulation" and a filter for ".edu" sites should give you what you need to know.

MIT has a detailed PDF document which includes critical radius of insulation. See: http://tinyurl.com/kmcpk

I would not have found this if nobody asked about it. So, I'm glad I brought it up.

One site that I found a few years ago might be useful to you if you're really into heat transfer, a free textbook in PDF form by prof. John Lienhard.

http://web.mit.edu/lienhard/www/ahtt.html

I'll add that when my college professor first introduced the principle, I didn't believe him and thought it was some kind of prank - until he gave us the page numbers in the text book which explained it in detail.

Enlighten us all?? I have a good idea what it is all about -- but maybe
others need to know.

Your were discussing the economics of over insulating and fixed shape??

I once did some revolutionary work based on thermal barriers --

Which probably would blow minds!!

And probably would brighten some lites a bit.
