Oops, just as I was about to fall a sleep it hit me, I forgot:

Yes if you do not heat the die the friction of densification will heat the die 
BUT you will have increased die wear and increased power requirement. So heat 
the die to have longer die life and use less energy. Well in regards to the 
energy, thats if you have cheaper heat than electric motor energy (it's 
getting late).
