Rex,
Thanks for the challenge! It sounds exciting to solve the fuel requirement
with renewable energy! Since wood gas has a lower heat value of
5,500kJ/Nm³/h, this would translate into a Gasifier size of 1,818 Nm³/h to
produce 10GJ/h.
Our currently biggest commercial Gasifier produces 450Nm³/h = 2,5GJ/h (one
would need 4 or 12 respectively to get to the fuel requirement of 10 or
30GJ/h).
We do have more than basic design data for an 850Nm³/h unit = 4,7GJ/h, but
have not yet industrialized it due to lack of demand. Such a project would
have to be a joint venture, covering feasibility studies, cost aspects etc.
One could then even contemplate to tackle extra large Gasifiers for which
our very basic design data goes up to max 2,500 Nm³/h = 13,8GJ/h, as
mentioned in our website brochure www.carboconsult.com.

Calling all Listers!
We have a project that requires 30GJ/hour of gas or liquid fuel. The
current idea is to use heavy furnace oil as this is the cheapest liquid
fuel available in South Africa. However, the plant is to be built in a
forest area with lots of biomass available as fuel. So using biomass to
make syngas is a strong possibility.
Does anyone know who would be able to supply a gasifier of this size?
One of the options is to split the plant into three trains using
10GJ/hour each which may make things a bit more manageable. The
application requires hot gas at 600degC that circulates through a heat
exchanger and returns at 400degC. Some of the gas is bled off to
compensate for incoming combustion air and fuel. The incoming air is
preheated with the outgoing gas. This set up allows the gasifier to send
hot gas directly to the combustion chamber. This heat would be part of
the 30GJ as the 30GJ is the nett energy input.
If you know of a supplier who could help, please contact me.
Rex
