To Tom Miles & All,
I think a FUEL topic is a very good idea.
Is there also sufficient interest for a BIOMASS METHANOL topic?
Questions about and interest in the possibilities of biomass methanol are
recurring in GASIFICATION. Three quite recently.
The technical elements of the problem are fairly defined. Some are integral
to GASIFICATION, such as making synthesis gas and making biomass producer
gasifier gensets to provide electricity to make oxygen. Other aspects are
fairly unique, such as types of oxygen plants, types of compressors, design
of catalytic reactors, types and preparation of methanol catalysts, and
other 'plant' components.
My purpose is not to segregate methanol from gasification, but to focus an
archive and ongoing discussion. Those who now control Washington policy
making have made it clear they are not going to support 'Methanol' with
either policy or funding via DoE. So if biomass methanol is going to be
done in the near future, it's going to be done without any leadership from
'Washington' or from the academic complex that cues on Washington. State &
local government and non-government effort still provide a wide field of
action.
Rising average fuel prices - and rapidly rising food prices spurred by
Washington's favored ethanol policy - are spurring rising interest and
motivation.
Best Wishes,
Mark
