    I suspect that both Jeff and  Greg would also recomend Doug Williams 
plans for an imbert style downdraft system.    A link to them at the 
fluidyne website I belive can be found in the archives.   They are the 
best plans I have seen.    Good reading is also the FAO document on 
emegency systems which should also be in the archives, few people have 
reported great sucess with the FAO model, but many design principles are 
laid out fairly clearly.    
    A look at all the info around these systems will point out that one 
of the important factors in having an experianced operator is the 
operators ability to judge fuel quality!!!!    Size of fuel, moisture 
content, type of wood, are all very important to repeatable , reliable, 
consistant  tar free operation.   
    I recomend these resources in addition too the three Jeff has 
posted, not in place of them.
