Nature has more tools than just bacteria to breakdown long chained
hydrocarbons. For example, there are fungi which are selective for phenolic
bonds which make the energy necessary to breakdown normal hydrocarbons seem
small by comparison.
Nature has developed the tools necessary to accomplish the breakdown of most
organic matter. Just don't feed them freon based materials because they
have only recently been invented and nature does not have the benefit of
eons of time to develop the solution.
