Emory King -- the man that wrote the article -- is probably 85 years of age
-- and "retired" to Belize (well -- quite the working retirement) probably
40 years ago.

He knows well the "system" -- so to speak.

You can live very economically in 3rd world if your prepared to live 3rd
level "style".

Of course -- no person from 1st world even knows that style -- and probably
have a severe mental block to even studying it -- never mind adopting it.

However -- the Mennonite Communes to the north of Belize -- where I live --
no number over 25,000 people -- originally "retired" here in the early 50's
-- thrive -- and live extremely economically.

Anything 1st world costs triple or more here -- including keeping your beer
chilled in your own refridge.

Telecommunications is probably 15 times more expensive --

So for the vast majority of Modern Industrialized people your looking at a
very "minimum" of $500 US per week to make it.

Plus the "retirement" concept. Which ends up translated into real terms
here- - lots of boozing and messing around. Though both of those are much
more economic here (Beer is $1.25 -- Pack of Cigs $3.00 (or $1.00 black
market) -- they tend to do multiples more of it.

There are no jobs here for people of modern "training" -- the only options
are - -as he mentioned -- starting a small business (very difficult as the
Chinese and India folks have all those niches well covered since they
started "retiring" to Belize) or -- as the Mennonites do -- farm for a living.

Still -- there is much opportunity here --

Well -- think of the US in about 1750 or so -- and your that "pioneer" --

Hey -- even having modern plumbing -- a flush toilet -- is excessive luxury
-- eh??

What has also changed -- that King is hinting at subliminally -- is the
global perspectives.

We used to be able to find all kind of export oriented niches.

Most of those have gone -- replaced by "tourism" -- which is a fickle
supplier of sustenance in the best of times.

Interestingly -- the greater majority of what we call "Root" Belizeans here
simply want a green card to get to the US -- the land of milk and honey --
where streets be paved in gold -- and helicopters circle in the blue skies
dropping endless supplies of money.

I sometimes wonder if in a sane world "trades" could not be arranged??

Anyway -- for us here in Belize Emory's article in this weeks paper hits a
certain spot and is -- to us here -- quite humorous.

You see -- most of the people from the north land coming in these days are
moderately rich -- lower end millionaires -- building Florida style -- all
along the coast and on the islands -- and in compounds -- or as you call
them -- gated communities.

You now -- paving paradise and turning it into a parking lot.

If a crash does indeed come -- I expect a lot of nice gated communities
will be laying around -- abandoned!!

However --

If the world goes back to stone age -- Belize will be one of the best
places to live that style in!!

Right now the biggest game in town is a rerun of Florida "development"
times and speculation -- speculation -- speculation -- all being practiced
by numerous hustlers -- mostly from the "States" --

.5 million US Condos on the islands are flying big time these days!!

Bottom line -- if you single -- older -- and have a fixed income of at
least $500 US per week (and still spend "wisely") -- you can certainly have
such a good time living it up here -- so much so that you end up extending
your life --

Many people in the US and other industrialized nations spend more than that
per week and are depressing themselves to an early grave!!
