Dear Mark:
It is sad that the current National Renewable Energy Lab (NREL, here in Golden) no longer does fundamental work in biomass. Though I have learned a lot in my 30 years in biomass research, I come up daily with important issues still needing the kind of fundamental research they should be capable of doing or answering.
We prepared this encyclopedia in 1978-1980 with the best experts in the field at that time. The central, fundamental chapters are as good today as they were when they were written. The last third is full of gasifier projects that have mostly failed, but have a lot of good ideas in them. The first third is an "executive summary" overview which is still good.
I use it often...
Yours truly, TOM REED THE BIOMASS ENERGY FOUNDATION
