Safety of Wood Gas [Gasification] storing wood gas.

Dear Jigme,

At least in my state (Oregon) even ordinary wood stoves must meet
environmental standards to be sold and unpermitted installation of either a
"listed" or "non-listed" device is illegal. In addition to administrative
penalties, one risks the negation of insurance benefits should catastrophe
occur.

Several of the commercial European systems referenced on this list in the
past seem as if they were designed to meet current health, environmental and
safety codes. Onerous as it seems, it's a necessary step to take if one
contemplates commercializing a technology.

I have not seen the pages Tom Miles posted. They may make this point.

I suggest that the fastest way to get wood gas shut down at the federal
level by those who own our law makers is to hand them a dead child or two.

It may be a fact that wood gas has been used for 200 years by ten billion
children but a more important fact is that it has been killing human beings
for 200 years and it only takes one and a good K street firm to get a ban
going..
Over the years EVERY law and ordinance and safety regulation for these kinds
of products was fought tooth and nail, just as they are today, by the people
making money from the sales of the raw products and its accoutrements. Some
human being or beings, a great many of them children, died for just about
each and every law or rule.

It would be wise to advocate against installation of wood gas in any
domestic setting by anyone other than a licensed [and bonded] installer.
Not to say you can not but you should not. Like tobacco.
It would be better still to have an insurance company sign off on the
installation prior to use.
If the insurance men won't sign off on property and liability there is going
to be regulation sooner or later anyway so it would be prudent to kick the
can down the road a bit.
