Nils,
Good find. That's one of the same cubers that we have used. I was aware of
the tests but not of the results. They are probably producing about 4 tph.
I've been cubing straw for more than 30 years. It's not easy. The largest
straw cubing facilty we built had three cubers producing about 5 tph each.
That was for making feed cubes for export to Japan. We shut the plant down
when the Japanese buyers started accepting high density compressed bales.
Biomass - straw, wood, - is milled to about 3/4 in minus and extruded
through a die. The cubes are 1 1/4" x 1 14" x 2". Bulk density is 16-20
lb/ft3 (250-320 kg/m3) in straw. Sometimes higher. It is usually higher with
paper.
Cubes handle easily in equipment designed for wood chips. Not as easily in
coal handling equipment. Pellets are usually better for feeding with coal.
Cubing was very popular in Europe in the 1970s and 1980s for waste paper. I
don't know what the status is now. There were also may European firelog
makers. These small low capacity units also made small fuel briquettes.
These are more like the UK Straw Wafers. I have bags of them around the
office. (My mother always wants to use them for mulch in the garden.)

Dear Tom Miles
I just got a little interested in your "cubes" in the US/Canada and fell
over this article. Maybe we will learn more from you about this technology.
Is it the same technology as the UK "straw wafers"? How do you manufacture
these cubes?

At our present rate of switch grass processing in Chariton Valley we could
supply 4000 tons per month but it would take a few months to get into pellet
production. Right now we're putting it all into a boiler.

Roger, what's the wholesale price for switchgrass pellets? $2/bag?
What can SWG pellets sell for retail? $3-$4/bag?
