And the diesel droplets in a diesel engine burn even more slowly. 

I believe that the gasoline explosion is a conflagration, while "knock" 
is a detonation". 

Hydrogen has such a high burning velocity that its combustion is like 
"knock".  So they typically burn it very lean.  Hydrogen rich gas has 
enough N2 and CO so that it burns more slowly.
