Dear List,
Early diesels used fuel injection by high pressure air. This atomized spray,
into the cylinder, made a soft combustion hense slower rate of pressure rise
after injection started. No diesel knock was heard.

And the diesel droplets in a diesel engine burn even more slowly.
I believe that the gasoline explosion is a conflagration, while "knock"
is a detonation".
Hydrogen has such a high burning velocity that its combustion is like
"knock". So they typically burn it very lean. Hydrogen rich gas has
enough N2 and CO so that it burns more slowly.
