[Gasification] Air Inlet Nozzles/Air Flow Ratio

Dear Gasifier Designers:

I am glad to see this discussion of gasifier design and dimensions
here. The Imbert (nozzle type) gasifier was the most widely used
biomass gasifier so far (over a million cars, trucks and buses during
WWII). It is very important to size the gasifier correctly to the gas
and power generation desired.

Having developed the "stratified downdraft gasifier" (at NREL,
1980-1988) and the inverted downdraft gasifier-stove, I have long
thought that the Imbert design was inferior and that we could do better
today. So far, no one has done better. Those gasifiers cost ~ $1,000
(1983 dollars) and were operated from < 10 kW to ~ 80 kW by ordinary
civilians and fit on the back of a car or truck.

The FAO book is good on this subject. However, in our books there is
much more detail. I spent the morning today studying the scaling
factors shown in the much larger dimensioning tables in our books:
/*
GENGAS: THE SWEDISH CLASSIC ON WOOD FUELED VEHICLES:
*/(SERI-1979) T. Reed, D. Jantzen and A. Das, with index. This is the
"Old Testament" of gasification, written English translation, of
"Gen-Gas", written by the Swedish Royal Academy at the end of WW II
after successfully converting 90% of transportation of WW II Sweden to
wood gasifiers.
ISBN 1-890607-01-0
340pp $35

 and

/*BIOMASS DOWNDRAFT GASIFIER ENGINE SYSTEMS HANDBOOK: */ T. Reed and A.
Das, (SERI-1988) Over a million wood gasifiers were used to power cars
and trucks during World War II. Yet, there are now only a few companies
manufacturing gasifier systems. The authors, who have spent more than 20
years working with various gasifier systems, discuss the factors that
must be correct to have a successful "gasifier power system." Our most
popular book, the "new Testament" of gasification.
ISBN 1-890607-00-2
140pp $30

available at our website www.woodgas.com along with a number of other
books on both the theory and practice of gasifier design and construction.

Yours truly,

TOM REED THE BIOMASS ENERGY FOUNDATION
