Daniel & List,
DTU have already thought of your concerns about two stage equipment. As
the size gets bigger, they change the model between 1-10MWth and then
again above 10MWth. The large scale size is particularly clever. It uses
a circulating fluid bed that does pyrolysis in the bottom bubbling type
bed that is accelerated up into a high speed entrained area where air is
added to burn the volatiles and increase the temperature. A cyclone then
separates out the larger particles (char) and sand that are recycled
back to the bottom bed. Superheated steam is used to both fluidise the
bottom bed as well as gasifying the char. From the first stage cyclone,
the syngas passes through a high efficiency cyclone to remove ash before
proceeding further. Very neat. The URL is:
http://bgg.mek.dtu.dk/publications/pdf/amst02_o2_b1.pdf . I have managed
to download (from somewhere?) a pdf copy called "Demonstration of the
Vortex Process for biomass gasifiers". If you want a copy I can mail it
to you. It makes a lot of sense at small scale.
