Perhaps  a  propane valve from a fork lift or some such device can get
you  a  mass  produced  valve,  that is low cost and has a low failure
rate.  I've  seen  people  who  have  used  propane with their cars at
http://megasquirt.info/  I  know your system isn't a car, but it might
make  for  a good base platform with much of the lambda code and other
features like LCD outputs.
