It is possibly just a screw cap to blank it off to stop.

The bigger lumps should be smashed up to about 30mm, or large nut size.
Seperate the fines, and discard for other uses.
If the charcoal is really hard, it may need further reduction in size. Fill
to about 250mm from the throat, light, and fill another 500mm for first test
firing. No sense filling it right up if it has a problem with the charcoal
type, or size.

You will eventually have to set up a screening operation, and there are
plenty of literature on this being done.

I do have to stay outside of private groups, and cannot get too involved
with any projects outside of those approved by my
long suffering supporters. You can send pictures to me if deamed nessesary,

Yes, and it looks tidy for it's application. Do some trials and report on
the experience.
