Douglas Diaz,
I'm working on an updraft gasifier as well, and I have had a
difficult time finding
out much design information. On page 32 of the "Handbook of Biomass
Downdraft
Gasifier Engine Systems" there is some info about maximum recommended
hearth
loads.
The Technical University of Denmark has a study on thermal tar
cracking of updraft
gasifier gas that will give you a good example of the gas composition
you can expect.
At this link: http://bgg.mek.dtu.dk/publications/pdf/
sevilla2000_v8-67.pdf
The University also has a study that combines an updraft gasifier
with a stirling
engine that shows mass and energy flows.
Here: http://bgg.mek.dtu.dk/publications/pdf/amst02_v2_99.pdf
Quote: "However, as far as I know, there is no need in focusing
only on updraft
gasifier, downdraft systems can do the job quite all right."
I think an updraft gasifier would be better for your application
because you
will get a higher energy gas and you will not need to dry your
biomass if it is
drier than 40% moisture content (weight basis), i.e. you can use
green wood.
Hopefully this has been helpful to you.

P.S. If you have any other updraft gasifier design info I would be
glad to hear about it.
