Ref my latest posting on using non-crop land for bioenergy crops and 
increasing the productivity of crop land by means of carbon sequestration.

To answer Jan Mowbray's question, developing countries can certainly use this 
strategy. In fact, they may be the ones who most benefit from it, since 
yields tend to me lower than in countries with "factory farming".

Also note that historically, one of the great examples of carbon 
sequestration appears to have been the "terra preta" agriculture of the Amazon Basin.
