Yah, deer in some areas of WI and MN have it, and the DNR will test
your kills for it, but it's not widespread. The prions are spread by the
deer being overcrowded and picking up each others feces when grazing.
Note that deer are primarily browsers, not grazers anyway. I'm not
overly concerned, since I don't eat a lot of meat anyway, and don't
particularly like venison. I like moose, elk, and bison, but not so much
deer. Mostly I plan to use it for pet food. We had a dog team for many
years up in northern MN - I was just telling my wife that it was time to
get another one to pull a cart for hauling wood. Feed them deer.
The feral pigs I will eat, however, and they, of course, have other
nasty parasites -- all of which can be avoided by careful gutting and
meat processing (wear rubber gloves) and thorough cooking. And they are
open season, no limit.
Anyway, better the devil you know than the who-knows-what in
non-local food. Do you have any idea how much food comes from China
these days -- or other places where pollution is rampant and no quality
controls or inspections are existent? Not that the US controls are all
that great either, but.... Damn scary, if you ask me. Almost all
pharmaceuticals come from China now. Bizarre.
I don't mind buying Chinese mechanical or electronic stuff, but
food????? Drugs???? I don't think so.
