[Gasification] woodgas truck report for last night

we finished the truck this evening and spent about an hour driving around
oakland and berkeley. it works surprisingly well. certainly less power
than gasoline, but it ran very smooth and the truck was perfectly drivable.
started pretty reasonably too.
in the end i added an 8" fire tube which seems a reasonable starting point
for city driving. the vacuum is going between 1" water at idle to 25" water
on acceleration. i've never had my other gasifiers go that high on vacuum,
and it is likely too much, but the gas quality stayed reasonable for as long
as we could accelerate on city streets.
one big help seems to be that i now have essentially a 4x wall tank, and
thus fantastic insulation. the core of the unit is a 20" tank with a 14"
center fire tube. i then sleeved it with a 12" firetube, and sleeved the
12" with an 8". charcoal dust is pushed up inbetween each firetube, so the
insulation around the ultimate 8" inside tube is rather unusually good. i
did it like this as i want to be able to easily change out firetubes for
testing, as well as different driving conditions.
with the 8" firetube, i could idle the truck for a long while without tar,
and restart it after 15 minutes of sitting. no freeway long run at power
yet. we'll likely try that tomorrow. the water condensate is reasonably
clear and the filters are not showing debris. no leaks and no fires this
time.
i'll post some pictures tomorrow. but all and in, i'm again surprised how
reasonable it is to make these work. as a newbie to gasification, i'm still
a bit shocked when they work. it all seems so unlikely. but again, it
worked.
why this tech has remained so obscure and not more broadly engaged, i
continue to be amazed.
