Servel has made ammonia/water/hydrogen absorption refrigerators/water
chillers for air conditioners for decades. Most campers or RV's are equipped with one
which is propane fired, a small pilot light runs it and in about 10-20
minutes of starting it, ice forms on the chiller box. An interesting note is that
their input heat rate is the same as their output if you look at the tag on it.
I bought two 5 ton sized units for $25 each at an auction and they both
worked. The stainless and other steel heat exhangers, pump are worth lots more than
that.
One advanced energy company built a cascaded one which used engine water
jacket heat to make 90 tons/day of ice in Alaska. They also built a refinery flare
condensate recovery system which paid for the unit out of recovered liquids
in a year or so.
They make them up to thousands of tons in size. Hitachi makes large
commercial systems as do others.
Sincerely,
