I support of your position, high explosives handled by a competent 
technician are surprisingly safe, handled by a less competent 
individual, they are deadly.  I know both pyrotechnicians and 
stationary engineers, they share a great respect for the amount of 
stored energy in and destructive power of the materials with which they work.

Having a device with a huge amount of stored energy does require 
skills and handling which differs from what most would consider 
"common sense", but training and knowledge can make up for the 
deficit which common sense allows.
