Dear Paul,

I think the best one-time investment would be Mechanical Engineer Steve
Chastain's book, "Iron Melting Cupola Furnaces" ISBN: 0970220308. I have
a copy. Steve included a chapter that covers practical design and
construction of centrifugal fans. This includes equations and tables for
calculating air flows, sizing the fan and motor and then building it using
simple hand tools and methods of construction.
It's available from Lindsay Publications or direct from the author here:
http://stephenchastain.com/store.htm Plus you get a complete book on
building and operating small iron melting cupolas, no extra charge. And
which are fuelable WITH charcoal. :-) That's a lot of development bang for
the buck at $19.95.
Steve's latest book might also be slightly useful to some people here:
"Generators and Inverters".

Steve uses an old Ford Pinto engine as the project focal point for building
a DIY CHP system.
Best Wishes,
Mark
