Jim, I´m in Brazil but share your preocupation to measure six different gasses. I wish to take contact with group "the bay area gasification group". We offers you our ideas about ethanol production in small scale. Our place is Angatuba SP over Capricornio Tropic surrounded by ethanol distillerys.
  Regards, Benjamin

the bay area gasification group has in process an effort to make a
"under $1000" gas analysis rig optimized for diy gasification testing
and dev. the effort is led by bear kaufmann and charlie sellers.
bear is here on the gasification list. charlie is mostly on the
stoves list.

we are attempting a 6 gas unit: CO, H2, CH4, CO2, O2, H2O. the goal
is both an integrated and easily reproducable system for small scale r
and d shops, but also better understanding of available sensors that
can be incorporated individually for gasifier automation.
thermocouple probes and their data loggers are similarly propagating,
with intents to integrate multiple TC reading/logging into the gas
sensing unit.

so far we are sourcing and testing commonly available gas sensing
components of the thermo chemical and IR type, and integrating them
with an open source I/O board and laptop USB interface. we are
building these up from the components which are available cheaply from
sources like Figaro Engineering.

staring with the already integrated, multi gas sensing systems is
either extremely expensive, or will not work for syngas partial gas
concentrations. for instance, cheap combustion analyzers will not
take the high syngas CO concentrations. they can only be used to
measure the IC exhaust, not the syngas fuel.

integrated dilution is needed, and it is desirable to find an array of
sensors that will all work with one dilution, using air. temp,
moisture and other gas poisoning sensitivities further limit the
potential sensor combinations. getting a combined array that will
work on dirty, hot moist gas is proving difficult, especially for the
dedicated H2 measurement. but bear has some potential paths through
this and promises to report back here when more is known.

if anyone has experience with sensors they like particularly, or
experience on ones they do not like particularly, we would be
interested in hearing from you.

the bay area gasification group continues to meet every saturday, noon
to 5, in berkeley california. we generally tinker and burn things in
interesting manners. anyone is welcomed and encouraged to join us.

jim
