also, one of the main uses of smoke in tropical areas is for mosquito
abatement. mosquitos run away from smoke. so sitting in smokey
houses, or in the smoke around a campfire, is vastly preferable to
being attacked by mosquitos.
most people living traditionally in mosquito areas have tremendous
tolerance to smoke in their eyes. i was always amazed in papua new
guinea how everyone could sit in dense smokey situations that would
make the eyes of sensitive westerners run with water.

ps- smoke is also good to artificially age wood carvings, which the
tourists will always buy for a higher price than things that look new.
