Greg, Ken C, & List,
I have had this discussion about exporting power back to th grid with a
number of colleagues in the UK.
Whilst the method that Ken C. describes is technically easy to achieve, in
these days of increased bureaucracy and emphasis on health and safety, it is
very unlikely that you would be allowed to do this and receive payment from
your power company.
The electricity utility have the right to refuse connection of any
equipment, either source or load, that they consider might be damaging to
their network or a danger to thier employees, and have very detailed
specifications that define the interconnect and the approved equipment.
Whilst the induction generator will fail "safe" when the grid goes down, no
western utility looks at this approach as an approved method, and will not
authorise it. If you were to install this type of system without authority,
then you would be asked to disconnect it or face legal proceedings.
This is why, as Greg stated in his first email , the very specific demands
of his local electricity utility
"The interconnection to the grid is the most expensive part of this entire
process, as Manitoba Hydro wants VERY specific equipment for safety and
redundancy when "paralleling" with the grid."
