Another consideration is that any electrical device to be installed in the fuel gas downstream to the gasification zone should be explosion proof and therefore quite expensive.

Hello Doug. D, and Colleagues,

Nothing like getting the facts straight:

If you are going to blow the gasifier, then you have to set it up to be able
to give it a short suction on the gas outlet, so that the ignition flame is
sucked into the charcoal bed. This should only take about 10-15 seconds,
then swap it over to the inlet and put the blow on slowly. You should only
need about 100mm water gauge. The level of the start-up char should be about
100-150 mm over the top of the nozzles.

It is not advisable to try and run hot gasses through the fan on the gas
outlet, as soot will quickly fill the blades, and the bearings will cook. If
you go to suction mode, then you have to design your own cooling, cleaning
system, and the fan is fitted after these components. Fans act like filters
in some respect, in that contamination, either solid, or condensates will
separate in the turbulence.

Before you do this first firing, tell me what you are using for fuel and
it's size, and possibly the parameters you have used for the design. I do
have a small amount of time available over the next few days, so make the
most of it and do it right first time. It might save you a few years (:-)

Doug Williams,
Fluidyne Gasification.
