I have often wondered about this point but in terms of Lead for all those 
zillions of batteries needed for all those propsed electric vehicles. It 
doesn't matter what kind of battery, all require metals of some sort and 
there always finite limits to the availability and the potential pollution 
from the recovery of them.

I reckon we had a long term workable transport system in the era of horses 
and carts and sailing ships. World travel was possible and things got 
delivered. Maybe we are just trying to go faster and further than nature 
can support. And imagine what you could do with all that methane from those 
horses!!
