Harmon,

It *is* a conspiracy--of the US diesel fuel suppliers, according to an
article I read a while back (I thought it was on journeytoforever.org, but
didn't find it there just now with a very brief search). Apparently the
quality of diesel fuel in the US is so low that the modern diesels that run
cleanly in Europe cannot meet US (California?) emissions standards, which is
why the manufacturers won't import them, and diesels generally are branded
as dirty, causing low consumer acceptance--about 1% (?) of new cars in the
US being diesels, as against 35% (?) in the EU. But that or another article
said that a new diesel standard was due to be introduced soon in the
US--perhaps it is already in force now--so the situation may change.
