Thanks for your informative reply.

I am currently working towards dual fuelling an old 650rpm 6hp Lister 
diesel, but I have been experimenting derating this to run at lower rpm..

I have run this fairly successsfully down to 300rpm on vegetable oil, belt 
driving a permanent magnet dc motor/generator connected to a battery bank. 
At 300 rpm the Lister produces about 1kW. Because I am extracting dc power, 
I am not fixed to the requirements of driving a 1500rpm alternator.

The battery voltage controls the maximum speed at which the PMDC motor can 
run which has a fairly linear speed/voltage characteristic, and this in turn 
limits the engine rpm.

Indeed the compression stroke is assisted by current drawn from the battery, 
with a net charge returned to the battery during the power stroke.

I hope to be conducting trials with producer gas later this year.
