Thomas Reed mentioned that Lignins are mostly benzene ring oligimers rather 
than sugar oligimers.  Lignins actually are phenolics with highly 
substituted benzene rings crosslinked by oxygen bonding to make the lignols. 
The phenols are what make the tar, and thus the tars have antimicrobial, 
antifungal activity as wood preservatives.
Destruction of the phenols is the key to low tar gas.
