Why don't you try it for awhile? I have. It's a drag. We lived for
many, many, many years with no electricity. PITA. Ask my kids, they grew
up that way from cradle to college. We lived 18 years off grid, only the
last few did we go from kerosene lights to a generator. The cost of
gasoline for the generator was absurd, even back then, but at least the
lights were decent, and we could have power tools. Try using a hand file
and hacksaw for all your metal work -- I used to use various caliber
rifles and pistols to drill holes a lot. Crude, but it works.
Sure, you could have a belt driven tools, etc but that is not only
extremely complicated, but also very dangerous unless you have good
guards around them all. Lighting is the biggie. Gas lights require
mantels -- where are you going to get them? -- which break constantly --
and still give crappy light. Kerosene lights? Try it for an extended
time, like even just a month. Aladdins are the best and they require
constant monitoring, have the same problem with mantles, etc. Kids can't
run them. And where are you going to get the kerosene?
