  I think your right about the catalyst cost. If one has to spend big money on that section and finds that changes are needed, it could be a budget buster.   On the flip side, the high temperature necessary for low tar requires higher temp than most metals will sustain.  Insulating the outside generally makes the metal degrade faster.  
   
  Have you ever worked with clay and ceramics?  At an Indianapolis clay supply company (American Art Clay), I can purchase Buff Stoneware clay, 40# at $20.00.  That clay can be worked by hand and fired to a cone 10 (2300 f).  Its very durable and trying several designs can be done at very low cost.  One could perhaps make a clay liner or catalyst unit without complicated technique.  
   
  Think of the throat section (Imbert style downdraft) as a potters vase (less most of the bottom), complete with air flow passages (an area to experiment with size, placement, angle, shape) that sets inside of a cylinder.
