[Gasification] OFF TOPIC

Greg,

These little excursions are revelatory. This is not a group neatly divided
along right/left, liberal/conservative, save the whales/eat the whales, etc.

Originally I thought that everyone was a Green who was trying to reduce new
carbon emissions (with a few messianic types, for flavor). But the common
thread really is gasification; off that highway things turn into Deliverance
country pretty quickly with no guessing how our correspondents may think
about things like global climate change (or Fords v. Chevies or Windows v.
Linux, The GOP v. the Dems, Socialism v. Fascism or any of the other parting
points in the dailiness of our lives.

There's also a rather broad interpretations about what Science or the
Scientific Methodology represents and the relative value of opinion v. hard
data.

I wonder: If this so-called gasifier crew assembled in a single venue, would
there be brotherhood or mayhem?

At any rate, the fact that "Off Topic" excursions generate so many
strongly-worded interchanges (while a few beg to go back to discussing
tuyeres) shows that this is not a politically monolithic group.

Similarly, I doubt that all climate scientists who are publishing about
human-activity affected climate change are tree-huggers who want to rob us
of our Hummers. The scientific debate only works well when it's a
competition to determine which hypothesis is most formidable, based on the
solidity of its data underpinnings. It fares poorly when reduced to TV
"info-tainment" intended to foment--mostly--higher viewership and purchases
of more Hummers.

OT acronym, is this acceptable ?

Dear List,

    Please consider others when posting OFF TOPIC materials such as the
materials recently posted pro/con Global Warming.   I signed up for
gasification education/research, not ranting.   I would like to see
people adding OFF TOPIC to the subject line of any off topic posts, that
would allow my filters to sort most effectively.

    I must point out that the OFF TOPIC posts are not the worst part of
the experience, it's the "me too, not me" BS that follows.

    I understand that parties on both sides of the debate see the others
as misinformed, but in that case an off list email to the person seems
like the best response, though you should first consider whether a blast
of hot air has from you has ever convinced anyone of anything.   To
those that wish to rant, start your own list but begone from this
gasification forum.
