Mike when we did it, I won't say how many years ago or you will think me an
old codger,
we did not put the producer gas through the carburettor at all. you put a
tee fitting in behind the carburetter
and take of a separate pipeline to the gas producer and where ever is
convenient, you put in another tee fitting with two butterfly valves from
old carburettors, one on the lead to the gasifier which is connected to a
separate accelorator pedal, and the other to the open air which is on the
gasifier side of the the gas pedal throttle butterfly which is connected to
a hand control by bowden cable takem off the brakes of a bicycle. To get
really sophisticated, you have a sparkplug in the gasifier, a copper tube
into the firebox through which you can put a squirt of ethanol from a small
hand pump and a turn off tap on the fuel line to the carburettor. .
To get an instant start on your vehicle you do need some charcoal rather
than wood in the base of the gasifier before you top up with your usual
fuel.
If you close everything up tight when you come home after your last run
there should be enough left as the fire dies out.
You start the car as normal, in your case with ethanol and back out of the
garage. When you get on the open road, you pull out the choke on the carby,
at the same time as you open the butterfly to the gasifier and close the
open air one. Then you squirt some alcohol or whatever into the gasifier
and push the button on the sparkplug to ignite the gasifier. As you drive
down the road you soon get to learn the signs when there is some flamable
gas coming through and you start juggling the two accelorator pedals with
both your feet, and the carby choke and the air mixer butterfly with one
hand. Sounds rather complex but its like learning to ride a bike, and its
not long before you pull the choke full on and turn off the tap on the fuel
line to the carburrettor and you are driving down the road on 100% producer
gas and not using any alcohol at all.
Cheers, Ken C.
