Dear Jeff
Any HCl will work... dilute acid is slower, takes longer, and you need
more of it.
Note also that the zinc associated with Galvanized Iron is in two forms:
1: Free zinc on the surface of the metal. This comes off relatively
easy, because of its reactivity. Zinc plated goods have only "free zinc."
2: Intermetallic zinc, a zinc compound, Fe3Zn (?) The zinc has formed a
compound with the underlying iron. It is necessary to corrode away the
iron associated with the Fe3Zn(?) in order to get out all the Zn.
So, if you "acid dip" a part with zinc on it, you can easily remove the
zinc from zinc plated iron, but it is a lot more difficult to eliminate
the zinc from galvanized iron.
Best wishes,
Kevin
