I must second your point.  When I went to Northeastern (late 1960s), 
you were expected to know the basics of engineering and science, now 
it is political correctumtude.  We have "leaders" who are 
"environmentally correct" and will do anything to remain "correct", 
including influencing studies to show they are.

We have a corporate mentality which has no long term goals, but will 
sell it's cash cows to show a profit this quarter and will 
"outsource" if it looks cheaper, ignoring the issue that there are 
hidden costs.

What is the end result?  When the population finds that it can vote 
itself "free" stuff, it will, then complain that there are no jobs 
because the "free" stuff resulted in such high taxes that we can no 
longer be competitive. Sigh!
