Yes and further complication means additional expense so KISS seems to
be better and concurrent down draught seems to satisfy that, if you
can make it work.

This is not necessarily so, some fluidised bed systems use the bed
medium as a heat regenerator, so with appropriate choice of material
it is feasible to have a purely pyrolytic process followed by a char
gasification process where the charred component is moved to the
gasification zone in the fluidising medium and only screened, de-ashed
hot fluidising medium is moved back to the pyrolysing zone.
