If the national forests had any "mature trees" in any realistic number I
might agree. Unfortunately there are few "mature trees" and there will not
be nearly as many "mature trees" as there should unless we log off the
unnaturally large amount of trash. Might as well put it to use.

As for C02, that's junk science at best and sensationalism. Absolutely
nothing to back it. It is based on modeling that is defective and infers
result from an un-measurable and unreliable input. Serious scientists will
have nothing to do with it. Only supported by those who have nothing
worthwhile to study and who require government (read taxpayer) subsidy to
remain employed.

Let the city folks buy the land if they want it so badly.

The law establishing the Nat'l Forests says "muliple use" not
"highest and best use". At this point, I think the highest and best
use of forests is to use them for a carbon sink to offset greenhouse
gases, and allow a select cut for lumber. And fortunately, most people
in the US are rapidly coming to a heightened awareness of the dangers
of global warming, and that logging and deforestation cause more emit
more greenhouse gases than do all the cars. Even just the act of
logging with heavy machinery causes a lot of CO2 to be released from
the soil.
There are plenty of things that can be used for energy crops
other than mature trees, and the vast majority of them have far
greater yield per acre than do trees.
