    Is There a Firewood Price Reporting Service?   Q. 
Hi Steve. I saw your articles on About.com. I was wondering if there is anyone who compiles average prices for firewood based on states or regions?

I honestly don't know if such a service exists - or can exist on a national level.   Firewood in the United States is mostly given away and is a by-product of forest and urban tree management, a timber harvest operation or sawmill waste. It is sold for nearly nothing to hundreds of thousands of producers. These producer/cutter's credibility run the entire spectrum, from "might not be in the market tomorrow" to a large timber company wood yard with a firewood pile.   Firewood is basically a low value "commodity" and any commercial value is usually determined by labor and transport - very little is paid for the wood. I don't think a pricing service could actually find a statistically accurate set of sources to get a correct price per unit. Firewood prices are always determined locally where other forest products are based on the regional health of lumber and paper sales. There is also a lot of wood available for free if the user is willing to load and haul.   You might want
 to try contacting the traditional primary wood product pricing services for more info. Several are RISI, Forest2Market.com and Timber Mart-South .
