Harmon; in Brazil was maked motors for use "ALCOOLITA" diesel fuel using ethanol, five percent dinitroethyleneglicol and one percent of castor oil. Motors like Daimler OM 352 and OM 314, Perkins 236 and CBT four cylinders for tractors was fabricated near thirty years ago.

Frankly, I think it's a bit of a waste of time and effort. Much easier
to make ethanol, even on a small scale, and even easier to run the big
diesels on it. Two ways of doing it -- mix 1-2% of biodiesel with
straight ethanol and run it through the regular pump and injectors.
Or, use a kit that they were selling back in the '80s -- which injects
ethanol into the air intake downstream of the turbo. Both of these
presuppose a turbo with knock sensors controlling the wastegate. Not
much of problem with any truck doing commercial hauling today -- but
with an older diesel, with no turbo, you need to add an extra
headgasket to drop the CR to 18:1 or less.
Sorry -- gasifiers are great for stationary engines if you have
little else, but for commercial use, on the road -- it's going to be
either ethanol or CNG. And from what I've been reading lately, it will
probably be mostly ethanol.
